Remember in OS 8 to 9 you could send messages to users who were connected to your computer on AppleShare via AppleTalk? Clearly the hooks are still there to do that in OS X 'cos you can set a message to show automatically when someone logs on, and you can send a message from OS 8/9 to a connected OS X machine.

My question is, does anyone know the format of this message? I'd love to have that capability back. Also, I've done my fair share of TCP programming, but no AppleTalk programming, so does anyone know how I'd go about doing this if I can get the message format?

My guess would be that these messages are passed "in band" with the AFP connection, so that you would have to somehow re-compile the AppleShare server component to allow for this...
