I was just thinking that it would be terrible to have the Dock in the way when using stuff like Quake.

Can the app "put the dock away" or something while it's running?

I'm not a developer, I'm just curious whether this functionality is there.

Well, I don't think that the desktop and dock preferences control panel thing is part of the dock so if It, being part of the finder, can change the dock then I see no reason why any program can't. The only issue here is, I'd assume that you'd do so by altering something like dock.plist or something like that but I am not sure how you'd tell the dock that it's been updated. If it's as simple as altering dock.plist then maybe the dock is notified when the file has been changed, but I doubt it. You probably have to built some sort of a pipeline to talk to the dock. Of course, all of this is moot if the window that has the desktop and dock settings is run under the dock application and not the desktop. I doubt that is the case, though.

It is quite definately possible, take a look at Oni. While running there is no dock no matter where you move the mouse.

Thanks! But, speaking of which, I haven't been able to get Oni to run under Mac OS X. It launches as far as the triangle under it stops flashing, but then it immediately quits.

I have a Rage Pro. I'm guessing that PB doesn't support this and that's why. Is that it?

thanks again

You might not find this very useful; but if the game is created in a full screen window, the window can be placed OVER the menu bar and the dock with a window level setting. I'm not sure about hiding the dock though.
