I remember a nice little piece of software called XEarth. It produced a beautiful render of The Earth that could either act as a screen saver or a desktop background (it was actually an application). The Earth could be displayed with or without star background and city names. I seem to remember it was originally written for X Windows and ported to the Mac using the freely available source code.

Unfortunately I can not longer find it on www.versiontracker.com. I think I have a copy archived away somewhere.

This would be a beautiful little "utility" for MacOS X.

I'm not a developer but this would be a great project for a budding MacOS X software developer. No?

Just an idea. Any thoughts?
