Remember how in Mac OS 9.x and below everything had a file type and creator code? Well, in Mac OS X, not everthing has these. Some do, but not all. How does Mac OS X identify those files besides a suffix extension? In particular, I'm looking at mp3s that have been brought over from a PC and have no file type or creator code, and Mac OS X can only identify them with a .mp3 extension. Without it, Mac OS X doesn't know what it is.

Thanks,
Josiah Pugh

This is discussed in some detail in Inside Mac OS X: System Overview, I think. And possibly the overview for support providers, I forget.
