Hi all,

A few months ago I got the OS X pre-release CD's in the mail, which I'd purchased from Apple for, I think, $29.95 or something. I played with the beta, and ported a few of my basic apps to it, but then ended up selling the G4 system I was using ...

Since then, Apple has released OS X 1.0 to the public, and I recently got a Powerbook G4 to continue my development on.

Should I use the pre-release beta - upgrading it over the web - or should I just go ahead and purchase the new OS X release directly from Apple? Does anyone see any pro's/con's to this approach?

If possible, I'd prefer not to have to shell out another $100 (isn't it?) to get started on my ports on the new powerbook, but if there are compelling reasons to just go ahead and get the latest and greated, I'd love to hear from someone who has wisdom to share in this department ...

You can't upgrade OS X PB to the latest release over the web. The only way to do it is to buy it.

Also, I think that the PB expires in a few days, so you won't actually be able to use it any more. I also don't think that you'll be able to use OS X PB on your PBG4, since it was released post-PB and therefore there is no way that they could put in hardware support for it.

This is also not really development related... BTW, you don't say what type of apps you ported and using what API. Carbon has evolved significantly over the past 6-7 months since the PB was released, and there have been a few changes to Cocoa too.

Thanks for the info - I guess I'll purchase OS X 1.0 then, and get started on the port...

The apps weren't anything special to write about - mostly command line stuff, personal tools and such. I'm planning on becoming a much more proficient OS X programmer though, and certainly having this sexy powerbook all loaded up with what I need is providing lots of inspiration ...

Thanks again for your help.
