System-wide spell checker?

I was wondering about OSX's built-in spellchecker... The only third-party applications I've noticed using it are Adium and OmniWeb (Cocoa framework), yes I'm sure others do, too, but I was wondering if only Cocoa applications could do this? Is it hard to implement it? I'm not a developer, I'm just curious.

Fire also uses it. That is very needed in an IM client. The only other thing I have seen that does that is GnomeICU (and it isn't exactly plug&play).
