Where would I get the source for the latest xnu mach_kernel? Must I get it from anoncvs or is it posted somewhere in one convenient tarball?

cvs only, i'm afraid. and even if you do get it, i wouldn't expect to build it terribly easily. you might find it's incompatible with the last public OS X release, for example, due to all the evil project interdependencies. i'll leave some space for louis to ramble on about this should he feel the need.
