Well, there's fetchmail, which will just get your mail off a pop3 server and then mail it to you on the local machine. You have to turn sendmail on for that to work.
Then you can use mutt, or pine, or whatever you want to read, reply, etc.
Not sure if that's what you're looking for, but it's what I use to check my (pop3) mail over ssh when I'm away from home.
