Hi,

I am new to coding (well, actually it's been about 10 years since I did a little stuff with gwBasic in DOS) and I've committed myself to a rather large project now with the understanding that I'll learn as I go along. I figure at least for now, I'll write Obj-C In OS X maybe using project builder or else just in a simple editor like pico for starts.

My question is this. I'm a little confused by apple's ADC webpages. I would be eligible for the student ADC membership, and I think that's the route I'd like to take. What advantages does the Student ADC membership provide beyond those provided by the Dev. Tools CD? I know that CodeWarrior Java is included. Is a full version of X included too (including the Dev. Tools CD?) I ask because I don't own my own copy of X yet - I am holding out hoping that there's a new boxed version at MWNY so I don't have to do as many chain upgrades (and yess I know 10.0.4 is offered straight from 10.0 if you haven't already upgraded). So, am I better off just joining ADC because it would be cheaper than buying the education priced CD plus extra developer's stuff - books, etc. On that matter, does ADC student membership supply any kind of paper or electronic documentation or tutorials?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Well, with the free online ADC membership you can today download the developer tools for Mac OS X for free. With ADC for students is the same, plus you get a monthly or bimonthly CD with code examples, documentations and such. I think it is worth the money.

I'm a ADC student developer. There's a mailing each month with one or two discs each time.

Some of the content (development kits and electronic documentation) is available for download for all ADC members, including free Online members. But this way I don't have to download the recently updated dev tools with WebObjects trial (180MB). It will arrive in my next mailing. (I have already got the old devtools.)

Other discs are not available for Online members. I have OS 9.1 in several languages and the original OS X cd. X was updated with more languages recently, I guess I'll get that, 9.2 and 10.1 some time this summer. But I haven't been a member long enough to know if Apple always sends out new System Software. Note that pre-release software is (normally?) not included.

There is also a once-per-lifetime hardware discount (approx 20%) . I'm not sure how that compares to educational prices.

I think it's worth the money, even if I could get most of the software by using Mac-Up-To-Date and downloads. All programming documentation, except some marketing info etc, is available on the net too. No documentation on paper is included. I use the printers at my university...
