Does anybody know if LAME has any optimisations for a particular platform over all the others? I'm thinking of using LAME as a rough, real-world benchmark for comparing macs to macs and macs to pcs.

Anything I should know? ie. is this a bad idea? Other suggestions?

Thanks.

ps. I chose LAME because it is available for macs and pcs, is small, compiles easily, and MP3 encoding is something that I use!

Not a good idea... LAME on x86 make full use of MMX processing in the current x86 chip where as LAME on PPC does not make use of the Altivec at all... in other words, LAME is faster on x86.
