I am a student developer (going to my first year) and I am looking for a decent portable (because I am going to travel a lot between my parents house and my home). I currently work on a iMac rev A (233 Mhz, 160 Mb RAM, 4 GB HD) so I need a new computer (because OS X is a little bit slow on my machine, but workable).

The new iBook is attractive, but so is the TiBook. I have a couple of requirements on my dev machine : runs OS X fast, must be usable for 4 years, not too exspensive (student, remember). I can live with the little screen (because I have an external monitor + keyboard + mouse I will plug in once I am at home). Should I by a new iBook with a large HD and lots of memory or a TiBook with 128 MB RAM (I could add RAM later if it is needed).

The primary use of it is programming, but of course also some word processing, browsing, some DV editing, mp3, etc. What's your advice? Keep in mind that the usability must last for 4 years (at minimum)

Simply from a usablility standpoint, I would go with the Ti. Not only will it run faster now, but in 4 years, you will be able to use the new stuff MUCH faster than you will be able to with a "soon to be" antiquated G3. Think of it as more of an investment, I personally think that it will pay off in the long run.

Go with the TiBook. People are already complaining about OS X performance on their G3s (and even some with G4s!). You'll find that you can do things a lot faster (especially when you're doing them all together) on a G4. Four years is a _long_ time for a computer.

Anyway, I'm moving this over to PowerBook. But I think all of us in X-Dev would say "Go with the TiBook" :-)
