I want mulitple virtual domains on my desktop. I don't need to have anything go to the net since I'm on dialup and don't want to host just yet.

I'd like to have something like www.XYZ.dev and www.abc.dev the reason for this is that so I can do develpement work on my site and a friends without having to dialup to the actual sites all the time. I'd like to the editing at home first then later upload the end results to the net.

Any clues on how I can go about doing this

Download tenon's iTools from versiontracker.com... I havent used it yet, but it supposedly provides a GUI for doing things such as setting up virtual hosts, without you having to know a damn thing about it. I think you only get to use it for 2 hours or something before it expires.. but if you get everything done that you need to in that time, its no biggy. If you need more VH's later, you can just go into httpd.conf and copy and paste the stuff.

I think there might be a thread or two in these OSX forums about it as well, I remember reading thru the steps somewhere.
everything you know is wrong (and stupid)

Implementing it in Apache shouldn't be too difficult, just get a decent doc on it (i.e. the manual) and edit the httpd.conf. The main problem is that you'll have to fiddle with a DNS server.
