I've started an open source project on Sourceforge to create a server for Mac OS X application distribution(Version tracking and update locations). Any volunteers are welcome, although knowledge of C and/or Objective-C is basically a must. Here's a brief description of VTAUS:

VTAUS(Pronounced V-Toss) Stands for "The Version Tracking and Updating System". It is a server initially for Mac OS X/Darwin. VTAUS will receive commands from client applications asking for the latest version and update location of a software package.

The address of the website is:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/vtaus/

I hope to see some of you signing up.

Thanks,
David Kopec

Right now we have 2 developers besides myself, and a web site maintainer that will be joining shortly.

But we need more developers!
Anybody that has experience with C/Objective-C would be great.

Why a custom server? application? Most freeware/shareware/OS developers don't have a permanent server on the net, only a web page (at mac.com for example).

A central server is a secondary goal of the project. You can't make software that accomodates everybody's needs/wants. VTAUS is for people that DO have a dedicated server.
