I'm working on an OpenGL (GLUT actually) project and looking for suggestions for model implementations. I've already written rudimentary model I/O routines, but I need something that makes model construction much easier.

I need file I/O routines (C/C++).
I need some GUI-based app to create and export the actual models.

Thanks!

I dunno. That's a big old can of worms, since as you know OpenGL knows nothing about files or formats. I seem to recall some free/shareware Quake modelers/level designers. There ought to be code for reading and writing the files too.

I just did a web search on Mac modelers and found this page:

3dsite's mac software

It looks like several modelers will output DXF, which is a standard, text format. You ought to be able to find code/documentation for DXF.

I've read in .obj files for my opengl programs although I've never read any formatting documentation; it's very obvious how to use them.

3dExploration (windows only) can read in many file formats and output OpenGL code, for just a particular model.

I'm not sure what the best modelling program is. Teddy is a cool toy (Windows and Mac, using Java) for *easily* making cartoonish models. Chameleon, on the same web-page lets you texture the models very easy (though not always efficiently).

Bump...

Any other suggestions? There's got to be some decent character modeling tools?!

opengl.org has example programs that load various model formats into an opengl program.
