There is a known bug on the QS machines where sound goes away after the machine sleeps. Does anybody know what process manages sound? I was thinking that "HUP"'ing the process might make a good kludge until Apple fixes it.

This makes me sad. After I posted the message I started thinking about it more, and I had a bad feeling that was why somebody hadn't already posted a script of some kind to nuke the thing.

I don' t think Apple can fix whatever the problem is, or they would have done so by now.
