I'm sure Apple would love to see NetInfo become the authentication info repository for groups of Mac OS X computers and users, but I was wondering if there is any experience out there with folks using Mac OS X and Sun machines on the same network.

Are there options for integrating Mac OS X into a NIS enviroment? Are there any products in development?

Forgive my ignorance on this subject. This is all a little new to me, and I'm trying to get myself up to speed. I apreciate any and all input.

Thanks!

I found the followinf line in the /private/etc/hostconfig file:

NISDOMAIN=-NO-

Might this have anything to do with Mac OS X interacting with a Sun NIS domain?

Also, I hope this post is in the right place. Perhaps I should have posted to the support forum?

Thanks!

I did read somewhere that NIS was built into OS X PB, but disabled, and that it can be fairly easily enabled and used. I'm sorry I cannot remember where I read that, but it was a legitimate source.

I do also remember that the source explained that NIS+ (nis-plus) was NOT on Mac OS X PB, which is unfortunate, as that's what most Solaris systems use these days.

I found this page with instructions for setting up Mac OS X as an NIS client. I have not tried it yet, but the procedure looks fairly straightforward.
