Hi,

Can you (theoretically) have remote display's ( like in X Windows) in OS X ? I seem to recall reading something about remote capabilities of the Window Server in the System Overview which comes with the OS X Developer Tools.

If you could that would be truly amazing. Imagine a server application displaying OS X user interfaces on remote terminals!

Tenon's XTools (great product) lets you do that.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

That sounds great, but I don't see how Apple could avoid the performance hit that the X Windowing System takes to provide such a service.

Can anyone provide any insight? Was remote display a possibility with Nextstep/Openstep and DPS?

This is possible, at least theoretically, thanks to Core Graphics. What you read is correct; CoreGraphics does, apparently, allow for remote hosting.

However, I don't know of anyone that's done that for Quartz yet. I suppose it can be done, but I don't know of anyone trying it. Perhaps we'll see this from Apple for Final (in fact, I get the feeling this may be one of the "surprises" Steve was talking about).

I've looked into VNC server and client to provide XWindow applications to run on MacOSX.

http://www.cdc.noaa.gov/~jsw/macosx_xvnc/

The overhead will be the same as running XWindows (as far as I can forecast).

Ideally, there would be a free alternative to the Tenon tools. Or the ability to cross-compile X-apps using a compatibility library and allow them to run using Aqua as the window manager.

Remote windowing did work in DP3. They disabled it when Aqua was implemented. Apparently all the necessary internal code is still there to do it but it's not hooked up to anything. I don't know if they're having a hard time getting it to work with the Quartz rendering engine or if they've just decided to let some third party developer run with it.
