you can see my web page here: http://chuckie.home.dhs.org
if you look at what i have up right now you can kind of see that i have a lot of content and thats the best way to arrange things that ive found so far while allowing people with lower resolutions to view my page.
i cant think of any other functional ways to organize the content of my web page. if you guys can come up with ideas and maybe a sketch, i might do a redesign once finals are over. any ideas?
function over form...right now i have a microsoft.com type arrangement. i think i would normally do more stylish, creative stuff but i think its a lot of conent i have there. id like to keep menus going horizontally because people can scroll down more easily than they can scroll left and right.
let me know if you guys come up with anything.

the only reason i did that really is cuz i was lazy and didnt wanna bother working on a dynamically resizable page. yes...but that can be tossed out on the next redesign since school will be out and i will have more time. any other suggestions? keep em coming.

Javascript is not the most terrible thing, if done correctly. The problem I have is you have a run-time error on line 32 (that is what InterDev is telling me at least. I didn't take to look into it too much.
As for the idea of opening a new window and creating a head-less browser (that is what I call it when it opens a new window with no options to browse, stop, back, etc. ) I have never understood that. I would always perfer a page the doesn't immeditately open a new page.
Just my two cents,
dw9

the javascript error is not the "open a new window" script but the counter i have there on the page. i dunno why its being so lame. every other time it gives me the error. i should remove it.
as far as removing the buttons etc in the new window, i did that for a few reasons:
to save space so there can be more content viewed at once
i dont have to worry about resizes
the splash page ends up being an announcements page sometimes when i need to take my server down...give people a heads up.
the page is easy enough to navigate i hope where you dont need the back buttons.

For starters: SPLASH SCREENS MUST DIE!
*calmer now*
You really ought to get rid of your splash screen. Splash screens are ONLY good for porn sites, where they are strictly needed (Are you over 18? enter - exit)

i really like the logo i have created for my site. theres a lot of stupidity in my site. maybe i should put a warning up. the uptight must not enter.
basically theres a splash screen because theres a new window where the site actually is contained and theres a new window cuz im lazy and didnt want to worry about resizing.
it seems no one likes new windows for navigation and no one likes the splash screen. lets get beyond that. is there a better way to organize the innards?

Let me be cheeky... You can browse through the hugest websites of the World (Apple, MacNN, ehh.. Microsoft) without being confrontated with splash screens or the need to have Javascript enabled which proves that there's no need for them at all.
It depends (as always) who you want to reach with your website.
If you know your visitors have time and like to be entertained, start with a flash animation, put lots of graphics on your pages and let them try out what happens if they click here or there cause you know they have nothing better to do at the moment.
If you want to be informational or want as many people as possible to read something use as less bells and whistles as possible. Remember www-surfers are often impatient and if they need to wait for a slide show to end, figure out what to do on their own, getting windows opened without knowing why it doesn't continue in the old window, having to stare at their 56k modem cause it needs to load 10 large pictures, ... then they are most likely gone after two clicks.
So if you want to show your talents it'd be a good idea to put it a bit behind some links so you have the chance to tell first what people are getting to see and they might read it
