Hi, I wanted to buy a 13 year old kid a beginner's book about Web design and wondered if anyone had any suggestions. He doesn't have a powerful system (he has an original iMac), but he recently got to try his hand at creating a Web page and was so excited by it and is so interested in doing more with it that I hoped to get him something that might help instruct him as he learns. I saw a book on Amazon called "Web Design in a Nutshell", by Jennifer Niederst. Is that a good one?
Incidentally, I know the first thing he probably needs is an updated computer, but that won't happen immediately.

That is an EXCELLENT book - what I was going to recommend until you recommended it yourself. Don't worry about his computer - it is fine for what he needs (although I am sure he will tell you otherwise). Seriously I have had that book for 4 years and it is probably the most thumbed book I own. I know it inside out now but it taught me a lot. I have plenty of other books but this one covers everything.
A copy of BBEdit would be nice for him but BBEdit Lite is free and sufficient.

Although I am only familiar with the Dutch version (original language) Peter Kentie has written an excellent book.
Web Graphics Tools and Techniques.
<a href="http://www.kentie.com/indexe.htm" target="_blank">http://www.kentie.com/indexe.htm</a>
It may seem glossy and shallow at first appearance, but the book is readible from cover to cover, and I constantly return to it for reference.
The last ten pages taught me how to set up an interactive page with PHP and Mysql, which is an example of how deep it actually goes.
That being said, out of the 25 or so books I've got, anything published by O'Reilly (The "In a nutshell" series mentioned before, amongst others) has been an excellent buy).

If the latter, HTML 4 Visual QuickStart Guide is a simple but comprehensive resource. If the former, I'm not sure of any books, but learning by imitation always works.

Check out <a href="http://www.htmlgoodies.com/" target="_blank">htmlgoodies.com</a> The HTML primers and tutorials are very easy to follow and the kid will be making websites in no time. The book is also great. I bought it after I finished all the leasons as a reference and i still use it.
P.S For all you web designers out there, there is a great hex code colour chart on this site <a href="http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutors/colors.html" target="_blank">here</a> as well as a non-dithering chart.
