I've ordered an Xserve to replace an aging B&W G3 mail and web server. It hasn't shipped yet (perhaps they're waiting to put 10.2 on it?), but while I'm waiting I have a question about setting it up for remote administration.

Comments on Xserve in other forums have referred to the necessity of setting up "reverse DNS" for the server in order to use the remote administration software. What is this, and where does it have to be established? If it involves new entries in the DNS records of my local nameserver, I should request that that be done in advance, since it takes them a while to respond to requests in this area.

Reverse DNS is the ability to lookup a hostname from the IP and is a configuration on your DNS, or the ones provided for you. You should just have to verify that the IP you are using is available for reverse lookup. You could actually try a reverse lookup on the IP you are planning to use for that machine and see if it comes back with the DNS entry that you may have registered for it.

In short:
=======

DNS and REV DNS are done by whoever runs the nameserver that contans your hostnames.

From a command line:

If you can do 'nslookup www.abc.com'
and the nameserver returns with: '1.2.3.4'

Then if you can do: 'nslookup 1.2.3.4'
and the nameserver returns with: 'www.abc.com'

Then 'reverse DNS' is working as it should. (you'd replace www.abc.com and 1.2.3.4 with your info of course).
