Waiting for my Xserve to arrive (due next week), I realized that I have no way to run Retrospect on it if it's headless. I had sort of thought that Apple's remote server admin software would cover everything, but now that I look at it, it won't help me with a GUI-based application like Retrospect.

So, is the answer Apple Remote Desktop? Can I use that control the Xserve and OS X Server (10.2, I hope) from another OS X machine on the network? And does anyone know if ARD runs under 10.2?

There'll be an ARD update when Jaguar officially shipped on 8/24.

Have patience.

Apple Remote Desktop 1.1 (the updated version) does not seem to run with Jaguar Server. It installs fine, but you cannot connect to the server using it... Pity...

Perhaps I'll be just as glad that my Xserve came with 10.1.5 instead of Jaguar, and the "OS up-to-date" program still hasn't managed to ship me the upgrade. that will depend on whether I can use ARD 1.1 to control the 10.1.5 server from a 10.1.5 client....

Does anyone know if Timbuktu (or anything else) can control the 10.2 server desktop remotely?

Can anyone else confirm this?

I finally received ARD 1.1, and installed the Admin package on my desktop machine (still running 10.1.5). I also had to run Software Update to install what claimed to be an update to ARD 1.1, which is what I thought I had on the CD. Whatever.

I then installed the client package on the Xserve, again still running 10.1.5 (thanks to the speed with which the OS X up-to-date program fills requests). Again, I had to run Software update to update it to what the disk said it was. Configured it to start the client on booting, set privileges, and rebooted.

With this setup, ARD works fine to administer the Xserve: I can open the desktop and work as if I were at the console. But is it all going to break if I ever get Jaguar Server for the Xserve, and upgrade my desktop to Jaguar too?
