I have a lack of understanding of the mail server setup in 10.2. Please help me!

Here's what I want to do. I want to be able to send SMTP mail through my machine from arbitrary IP addresses (when I'm out and about with my iBook and at work), but I don't want it to be an open relay. I also want other users on the server to be able to send their mail from their own machines (which may have dynamic IPs).

If I require SMTP AUTH, it seems that the Apple Mail Server will reject incoming mail for local users on the server, meaning I can't receive any mail. This appears to be a bug, since it's documented otherwise in the manual.

So I turn off SMTP AUTH in order to receive mail, and that does work fine.

If I then restrict relaying to a certain set of known IP addresses, then the server is prevented from being used as an open relay, but that also restricts me from sending mail from any IP address.

Anyone know how I should set this up to do what I want to do?

Thanks!

I figured it out.....eventually.

What I did was to:

1. Restrict relaying to known hosts
2. Turn on CRAM-MD5 authentication and PLAIN/LOGIN, then turn off CRAM (which leaves PLAIN/LOGIN enabled). Leaving CRAM on would cause incoming mail to be rejected even for local users.
3. Set Mail to use Password authentication

I think there's a couple of bugs in there somewhere :-)

I have the exact same problem in 10.1.4. I have 5000 emails from someones spam sitting on my mail server. I used netinfo to turn SMTP AUTH on and it was rejecting ALL my mail. How do I make it work right? I don't have all the options speirsfr has in his server admin, since I'm only on 10.1.4. Anyone know how to make this work?
