I'm a bit confused about Apple's new Open Directory service and how it works with (or replaces) NetInfo. Is Open Directory simply an LDAPv3 front-end to NetInfo, or is it a next-generation directory service that will eventually replace NetInfo? Or both?

I'm aware that user information can be accessed through Open Directory, but what about share points, filesystem mounts, TCP/IP configuration, and other things that are traditionally stored in NetInfo?

Does anyone know of any good sources of information (such as a "best practices" guide) about Open Directory?

Thanks!
T./

It's sort of both.

Open Directory is a generalized architecture for directory services, with a preference for LDAPv3 as the communications protocol. However, the main feature of Open Directory is that it's generic: it can interface to several different types of backend databases and work with other directory servers. Currently, NetInfo is used as the database, but LDAPv3 is the preferred means for sharing directory information.
