I am planning to set up a server for my school which has all Windows clients. This will be a file server, a print server, and a web server to host the school web site.

I know that the specs I mentioned above (233MHz G3 Beige (256 MB RAM)) might not be enough but just a few notes I want to add. There are only about 20 computers in the lab and there aren't many print jobs and as for the web server the site is rarely accessed.

I was actually planning to set up a linux server but that will be a bit too complicated. Please guys any help would be appreciated.

Dot,

That should be enough of a machine for the small number of users you have, and the low web page hit count. More RAM would be a good idea, and don't expect the machine to blaze.

I'm using an even older machine, but with an upgrade card, so it is G3 /333 Mhz, with 288Mg RAM. I'm getting more RAM.

If the machine can support an upgrade card, I would splurge on that, but only after getting more RAM, probably as much RAM as the machine can handle.

If its already broken, how can I mess it up by trying to fix it?

Hey thanks for the info. This is really reassuring. Well, the next step now is trying to convince my school to purchase Mac OS X Server!

There is an utility that is used to allow you to install X on non-supported hardware. I don't believe that Apple supports X on anything that is pre-Blue & White. That might cause a hick-up in your convincing the school to purchase the software.

The utility is called XPostFacto, and is available thru Other World Computing. http://eshop.macsales.com .

The current version of XPostFacto is 2.2.4, and worked flawlessly for me in my install on my "Old World Machine". I would familiarize yourself with the discussions and even try installing regular OSX on the hardware, just to figure out where you might hit snags. (on my hardware I can't have a boot partition over 8Gb... go figure)
http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/

The utility is shareware, and if you want access to the forums you will need to pay 10$ for a license for the software. It is well worth it. Ryan Rempel who wrote the utility lurks on the forums, and it very helpful if you have an issue that stumps you.

I installed OS X without problems on my beige G3. The beige is the minimum spec machine that Apple supports. It also does not accelerate the Rage II+ graphics card in the Rev. A machines.

Also, I would recommend a RAM upgrade for that machine. 512MB should be enough, the max is 768MB.

Sigh...I knew this was too good to be true. Anyways I will try installing OS X Jaguar (not the server) on my beige G3 and if that works then I am in luck. But Thanks for the post!

I have tried *everything* to get OSX onto the beige G3 at work. It just will not do it for me.

You might have more luck... I hope so.
