Hello, I just recevied a new G4 tower server for our school and I wanted to install OS 9.2.1 so I could run classic, but when I booted into the machine with an OS 9 disc, it booted fine, but when I double clicked on the installer to install it, it told me it was not available for that machine. Anyone have any idea if I can get classic to install on this or not?
Thanks

Umm.. if this is a server, why do you want to run classic at all?
A server does one thing well - serve. There's no reason to install Classic on a server. There are no decent server apps for 9.x

Classic, also, is not supported on OS X Server.

OK, well, here is why I want to do this:
I already have a G4 733MHz on my desk. The server is for a small school that I teach and do Tech stuff for. All we want to do is use the server as a mail and web server. I figured my 733MHz could do that, but I needed to get Mac OS X Server, and we needed another machine to run it on. When I got the Dual 1.25 G4, I figured I would run the server on my 733 and use the Dual as my new machine, I installed OS 10.2.2 on the server machine, but when I went to install OS 9, I got the problem described above. So that is why I want to run Classic on this machine, it doesn't have OS Server on it. Any ideas??

So you are trying to run regular OSX10.2.2 on the server hardware and it won't let you install classic. And you want to install OSX Server onto the 733mHz machine due to your light needs for a server. Hmm.
Just to clarify the situation:
If you boot from OS9 installation CD, then the drives don't show up? Hey, the new server supports 4 internal drives by having two IDE controllers. Perhaps it's having trouble booting from the devices because the controllers are not supported in OS9.
Anyone else have a clue why the server hardware isn't installing OS9?

Also possible that the the hard drives weren't initialized with OS9 drivers. If they aren't mounting automatically when booting off the OS9 disk, go into disk utility and see if the drives are there. They may just need to be reinitialed with the proper drivers, meaning you will have to reinstall OSX also... no other way around this as far as I know.

What OS 9 version are you trying to install? Unless you have a 9.2 install disk, it won't go.
In order to put OS 9 on a new system, you need to use the restore CDs and configure the restore with OS 9.
