Some people have approached me with the idea of setting up a website for their student organization, with a message board component. I thought a Mac running OS X Server would be ideal as it has pretty much the same benefits as a Linux web server, with added .... ease of use ;]

Also the fact that MYSQL and PHP are included would make it good for a message board.... heres the problem... what open-source PHP/MYSQL bulletin board system will compile and run on OS X Server? I'm not sure if OS X Server supports fink so I may be out of options for many of the packages that such software usually depends on. is OS X server a good choice or should I just go with straight OS X plus fink plus doing things a bit more manually?

Well, I've tried all versions of MacOS X servers and can say that everything is not that easy as Apple say, you have to use terminal and commands otherwise some future won't work, like bind, MySQL, and other stuff, didn't hear anything about native fink for darwin, i've seen for x86 and you can run it under server, but didn't see native one.
Many problems with server, but you can solve them if you have expirience and now 10.2.2. looks really stable, but internal firewall and other kind of GUI firewalls have a conflicts, so you have to choose wich one GUI kind firewall to use, or you just setup everything from terminal.
Webmin looks good for server, but not everything works great, so it's still like an adventure if you are not unix guru.

I'm sorry man, but you can throw together a cheapie duron box or something and pay nothing for Linux and accomplish the same task. Both will take a little configuring, and I would say that more people are experienced in Linux to help you.

No point.
Get a cheap AMD x86, put debian linux on it, and apt-get apache, php, mysql.
Fink got apt-get from debian, so you should know how to work it a bit.
Then install either ikonboard or phpbb and you should be OK.
Packages like phpmyadmin for mysql admin and webmin for apache, among other things, will help out a lot.
Also, you have less overhead, and I find debian to be more stable then OSX, also.

That'd be my recommendation.

From what I've seen and heard, OSX server is no easier to setup with that stuff.

This is of interest to me too. I would like to set up a server in an environment that has 5 Macs networked. Is there a site that anyone can recommend that can walk one through the basics of putting together a cost efficient server solution of 80 to 120GB?
