My god! This sucker is loud! and big! I thought I might be able to stash this somewhere in my 4-person cubicle. But after plugging it in, there's no way I'll be able to keep this anywhere near our area. One, because the fans on this thing sound like a huge air conditioner running, and two, I thought I could maybe mount this somewhere unassuming, but it's huge!

I'm going to have to route the CAT 5 across the ceiling to a store room around 35 feet away. I don't want to buy a special rack though. I have some decent shelving in there and it's lockable, so that's good.

Has anyone had experience with installing a single Xserve or have some suggestions with any of this?

By the way, this is one part of a complete overhaul for our marketing department's Mac network. Three G4's, Xerox printer, Xserve, gigabit ethernet.

Your right about the noise.. I found that as long as it is propperly supported; with good ventilation space: You can put it anywhere you like. It won't complain as long as it has a nice room temerature and good airways.

Yep - make sure it has room to breathe, most importantly.

Then, the right air temp.

I just stashed it under the desk in our office. The noise doesn't bother me in the least.

Maybe you can find some kind of rack holding desktop case. Something you can just put the xserve in and then plop it on a shelf anywhere? You could always make a wooden type of case. There goes the Apples' good looks though :-)
