So guess what - the 10.2 server that houses the home folders and password server for the eMacs in my lab needed its IP address changed, according to the IT people. No problem, I say to myself...

I change the IP address, update the clients to look for NetInfo at the new address and guess what - the server gets a kernel panic whenever a client tries to connect.

So I change the IP address back to the old one - still kernel panics. I found a thread at Apple's discussion boards about this issue, and apparently when you have directory services running, you CANNOT change the IP address, period!

A call to Apple tech support confirmed this - our only option is to format and reinstall the server, involving a backup of the home folders and manually re-entering all of the users into Workgroup manager.

Dammit.

Anybody perchance know of anything that will make this a little bit easier on me??

Why not just stop providing services, then change the IP address?

Believe me, I've tried it. The damage is done, I'm pretty sure.

I think there is a way to move all the user info over to the new install .. the guy who works on my OS X Server did it a few times i think.

I would continue to look into the situation though it seems strange you can't do that.

Best of luck..

Can't you just run the Directory Services Assistant and use that to point to the new IP address. It has worked for me.
