I want to enable journalling on my dual drive Xserve, and I realise I should check the disks properly first. However, I don't have physical access to the machine, just Timbuktu, so I can't start in single user mode etc. Is there any effective way to check and repair disks without logging out?

I'm not using RAID.

You can start by checking the disk in Disk Utility - it can check but not repair.

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

OK, so I checked with Disk Utility and it found errors. If I restart the server, will it automatically fix those errors? Can I then assume a stable system to enable journalling?

The other option I assume is to format the backup drive with journalling, (carbon copy) clone the live drive to it and then restart from the backup drive.

If I have errors on the live drive will they be copied in the cloning operation?
