I just purchased a dual 1GHz Xserve box and sent it down to a datacenter to be installed. They entered in the TCP/IP internet/network configuration, but the server isn't seeing the network and I can't ping its IP address from anywhere. They've tried both ethernet ports, and switched the cables, and restarted. It doesn't seem like there much else to test. We've even tried 2 different IPs on two different routers. Nothing.

Any ideas why the Xserve is deaf to the network?

It sounds like you're testing the connection from off the box.

Have you/they checked what the box itself thinks?

Plugging in a serial cable or attaching a monitor/keyboard would let you see what's going on from the Mac's perspective and may provide more clues.

on the xserve itself, is the interface even up?

you could do a:

% ifconfig -a

to see. You should see a line that resembles:
Code:
en1: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
notice the UP. That tells you that the interface is active. On the xserve you have 2 nic's so check en0 and en1
