I acquired a version of Mac OS X Server and whenever I login, i hear hard drive activity, then it waits about a minute, looking for something on the network (I assume this because it logs in fast with the ethernet unplugged) then finally logs in. I use server to host some FTP and web content, plus I like tinkering around with it's other features. I recently updated to Server 10.2.8 and the problem still persists. It did the same thing on 10.2.6 and at different locations (school, home, work, LAN party locations). I'm sure it's just a setting, I remember it working flawlessly before. I rarely shutdown/restart/logout, but I would like to know what is causing it. Any logs I can open to see what it's searching for (if anything) or if there is anything setup wrong? Any ideas?

I've encountered similar symptoms before. It could be trying to resolve a DNS entry, but is unable to contact one or more DNS servers in your configuration, and so waits until the attempt to reach that server times out before proceeding. If that is the problem, deleting the non-responding DNS server from your configuration will solve the problem. You should check in /var/log/netinfo.log and /var/log/system.log for clues, or verify your DNS servers by trying to ping each of them.

Thanks for the tips, but i have since upgraded to a beta of Panther client (7B80) and plan on upgrading to 7B85 this afternoon. Only thing I miss is the ability to create FTP only users. I figured it was something to do with the network settomgs since unplugging my ethernet allowed it to boot right away. BTW, I like your signature...

You're better off with SSH than FTP. FTP transmits passwords in cleartext; only a matter of time before you get hacked. The only "safe" FTP is anonymous access (where the "passwords" are bogus anyhow).

There's an old saying: Listen to their words, but watch their feet. I think that applies to the whole Iraq situation.
