I know they can be done, and I know how to configure clients.

However, I can not find any documentation on how to set this up on the server.

If its not clear what I am trying to do here is an example:

Often times companies have employee directories that are available to everyone on the network. You open your address book or contact manager on your computer and you have your personal list you created. There is also a contacts list provided over the network from the server of say a customer list or an employee directory that you never have to input names into but yet is available to you.

So can anyone point me in any direction or give me any information on how to set up my server to provide this?

Cheers,

The Bandit

Yeah, they usually do that with LDAP which is natively supported by Address Book, Outlook, etc.

OS X has OpenLDAP built into it, just give it a try.

Well, yes I am familiar that it can be done, its the how I am unclear about.

So how do I go about setting up a server based address book and populating it via LDAP?

Well, what's your setup?
How many computers need to be supplied?
How many and what kinds of servers are used/will be used?

Well,

I am running one 10.3 Server, its the PDC for my Windows clients and its the Open Directory Master for everything else. That is the primary server for my network, it does internal network e-mail, it auto-mounts a half dozen share points to clients including providing home directories via AFP and SMB and authentication for Classic Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Windows 2000 Pro clients.

There is also a secondary server [10.2.8] on the network but it is used for data backup and some other random tasks.

I want to provide server based address directories for a variety of uses so any user can sit down at any client and have ready access to say an employee directory.

I have been hunting around a lot for how to setup and populate a directory on my server and have not really found anything. Configuring clients [at least 10.2 and 10.3 clients] looks to be very straight forward.

So, anything you can tell me? Would be great to have more direction than I do now.

Cheers,

The Bandit

How about here?
AFAIK, you can use LDAP also to have a central authentication server for netatalk and samba using LDAP. For the specifics, check out the man pages and other forums. I am just used to my small environment of like 4 computers.
