Hi there,

during the last couple of hours I tried to set up an OSX 10.3 server system as a NAT system without luck.

Basically what I want to do is the following:

I have a G4 with two Ethernet cards and OSX server 10.3. The onboard card (gigabit) is connected to the local network, the PCI-network card is connected to a DSL-Modem (not router).
What I want to do is to use OSX Servers ability to distribute DHCP adresses and to work as a NAT server, so that our systems in the local network get IP adresses using DHCP and can access the Internet over NAT from our OSX Server system.

But unfortunately this refuses to work.

I´ve configured the PCI-network card in system preferences to connect to our ISP, and this does work. So I´m able to get to the Internet on the OSX Server system.
Then I´ve set a IP address for the internal ethernet card: 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, leaving the rest of the network settings empty (maybe this is the probelm?????) So far so good, now if I set up DHCP server in Server Admin (IP range from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.20; Router address 192.168.0.1) this gets distributed to the DHCP clients also. If I set up a DHCP client on an OSX 10.3 client system it will show up with IP 192.168.0.2, subnet 255.255.255.0 and router 192.168.0.1 as I would expect.
But then when I start NAT in Server Admin using the PCI network card I can´t get the clients to the internet. The server still connects nicely to the internet, and the clients can Ping the server, so the connection to the server is okay, but it refuses to route the traffic from the local port to the internet.

Does anybody has an idea how to fix that? Is there something wrong in my setup?

Thanks,

Floh

I'm also in the process of setting up 10.3 server to experiment with. I had the exact same problem as you, and what solved it for me was this:

Open System Preferences, then go to Network. Under the 'Show' drop down box, select 'Network Port Configurations'. Find the interface that's connected to your modem and drag it to the top. Click Apply now and see what happens.

When I did that, the other clients were immediately able to surf. Be sure your clients are getting a DNS address, either from your 10.3 server or one of your ISPs DNS, otherwise they will not be able to resolve domain names.
