The single, G4 Server that I maintain has developed a nasty habit of restarting itself at somepoint through the night. Which is posing a problem with various scheduled tasks other connected computers need to complete.

Where do I look to find a log entry for this?

I'm faced with restarting the box again when I come into the office in the morning because the monitor won't show up unless the KVM switch is activated for the server, rather than the G5 I'm running on the other side. So the log entries are only from that restart point on.

I know, this question is confusing.

I have checked and confirmed that the settings in the Energy Saver preferences are not the culprit.

I appreciate any constructive insight anyone may have to offer.

Check all of your cron jobs to see if there is something strange with them. My Xserve used to reboot at midnight ever other night because of a bad cron job.

check /var/log/system.log
If there's nothing in there, the system wasn't running.
Try resetting the PMU.


Make sure that power isn't being pulled from it at night; I had a customer who was complaining that his server was always off when he got to the store in the morning. Turns out the janitor's broom had been managing to nudge a switch such that it accidentally turned the machine off.
