I would like to install Gallery on my eMac, but the installation process seems rather daunting. Is there a good tutorial or plain English explanation out there to help the scaredy cats?

1. Install PHP from here, depending what version of OS X you are running (stay away from PHP5 for now). While you are there, also get ImageMagick since you'll need it to manipulate images within the Gallery.

2. If you decided on Gallery version 1.x, you will not need MySQL
3. If you decided on Gallery version 2.x, you will need MySQL, and you can get it here. I found this package to be the easiest to install and maintain.

4. Get a FTP app; recomending Transmit since you'll need it to change folder and file permissions once you start installing Gallery.

5. Install all the above mentioned software.

5. Get the latest Gallery package from http://gallery.menalto.com

6. Read the Installation instructions.

If you get stuck, come back here and ask.

I have everything listed above.
I believe I will star with Gallery v 1.x, and advance to v2 and MySQL later.
I am already stuck trying to install ImageMagick. The instructions say to run 'configure' script using the UNIX compilation instructions (Mac OS 10.3.5). I can't seem to find any such script in the folder.
I am really new at this. Thanks for your patience.

There should be zero cli configuration if you've gotten the ImagMagick package from Entropy (Mark, th elink I gave). Even Gallery picks the default path to it as well.

Let me know how it pans out.

OK, maybe we are talking past each other.

If you downloaded ImageMagick from the link I gave you, the only thing you were suppose to do is install the package and then install Gallery.

IM is just a collection of tools that are available to other programs to use for image manipulation, for example Gallery. Once you configure your thumb, medium, and large size image parameters through Gallery setup, Gallery is going to use IM to acomplish the task without you having to do anything else. Think of IM as a batch processing utility that is used by other programs. Gallery is just one example of this kind of software using IM; there are many more like Coppermine, Linpha, etc. You use these programs to access IM's capabilities to streamline the processing of images.
You can use IM through the command line as well, but Gallery does not require (nor need) you to do so.

Gallery's workflow looks like this:
Upload image(s) > IM resizes them for thumb, medium, and large size > Gallery sorts the images into an album. That's it.

I hope this clarifies some things.

OK.
The first error deals with the album folder not being writable by the web server. That is the folder where all of your images will end up.

The second error says that there is no temporary folder specified in the setup. This is the folder where images end up during "processing", i.e. resizing, manipulation, etc.

To fix the above issues, fire up Transmit (or any other good FTP program), and if Transmit is running on the server already, navigate to your Gallery folder, i.e. Library/WebServer/Documents/yourgalleryfolder

Next, right click on the "albums" folder and choose "Get Info". In the Info pane type in 777 into the value field. That should in turn check all of the available checkboxes in the Info pane. Close the premission pane.

Next, create a temporary folder (you can name it whatever you want)within your gallery folder and repeat the above process (777 into the value field), and close the pane. Make sure that you enter the location of your temporary folder into Galleries setup page (i.e. Library/WebServer/Documents/mygalleryfolder/mytempfolder/).

As to the third error (no specified path to ImageMagick), this is what you have to do. If you have downloaded and installed the version I have mentioned before do this.
Click on your Desktop so you get the Finder active
Do a search for visible and invisible folder containing the name ImageMagick
You should get a listing of the available ImageMagick folders

On version 6 of IM that I have, the path entered into Galleries config is as follows:
usr/local/lib/ImageMagick-6.0.0/

Let me know how it works out.
