I have been having some issues with my server half freezing up lately. It's a single processor G5 running OS X Server 10.3.5.

The symptoms are as follows. Mail service dies, Web serving is still working. I am not able to SSH into the machine. The GUI still works fine when in front of the machine as I can navigate the file system. However, when you go to launch an application, the round disc comes up and spins away without ever having the application laucnh. It will not even let me reboot the machine through software, need to hold down the power button to accomplish that.

I have looked through the system logs and nothing seems to stand out at me.

Does anyone have any ideas of where to look for a problem?

Thanks a lot!

I could not even guess where to start on that one, but your best bet is to head over to the Apple support forums and post the question there.

Also, update your OS to the latest version (10.3.6). Before you do, open up the Disk Utility and run a fix on persmissions. Then, Apple Menu > Software Update... and install all available updates.
Reboot, run Disk Utility permission fix again, and see what happens.

All the best

My advice is different. This has nothing to do with the fact that you are running the server version of OS X. This is basically one type of OS X crash. Run your Apple Hardware Test to check your RAM. It wouldn't hurt to run the extended test a couple of times. If you have DiskWarrior, run it. If you have TechTool Pro 4, run a surface scan. It isn't likely you'll find anything.

In the OS X forum, I've read about lookupd crashing and causing this specific issue, which has been around for ages. There may not be a simple fix.

ACSA 10.4/10.3, ACTC 10.3, ACHDS 10.3
