I have a dual 1.0 ghz QS that we'd like to make into a storage unit. What do I need to acomplish this? Can I just use Panther or do I really need OSX Server? All we want to do is store backup files and misc junk that we can put somehwere else. I have the box installed with panther now on one drive, and we added another 300 gig drive we want to use as storage. I have 3 users setup, but how can I move the users folder over to the bigger drive so store their files there instead on the little 9 gig drive I have setup for the OS.

I hope this makes sense...

Thanks!!

You don't need OS X Server if this is all you are doing. You can use the NetInfo Utility to change the location of users' home directories. Note that this just changes a text field. You still have to move the home directories yourself.

Also, there's a shareware program called Sharepoints X that allows you to customize the sharepoints in 10.3 client.

Sweet. I kinda did a work around lol, I just went ahead and installed osc onto the big 300 gig drive. Since it's only 3 or so gigs anyway it's not gona make a tremdous effect for what we want.

I am having another problem too, I can't get the machine to wake from sleep upon admin access. I have the other 2 acounts set as admin, and even the main acount won't wake it up. I have it selected in system prefs as well.

I see you live out in Swannowa, I live out here in the Arden area south of Asheville...

I haven't tried using the wake from sleep feature. However, I assume it's wired ethernet only--if that makes a difference at all. Any machine I expect to use as a server, I tell not to sleep. Of course, I let the monitor and the hard drives sleep, but the machine stays awake.

Considering the way sleep works, I wouldn't expect that any specific account makes a difference. I would think this is more dependent on the type of signal the machine receives; however, I haven't even tried using this feature, so the usefulness of my input here is pretty minimal.

My family is out in Arden--across from Avery's Creek Elementary School; I'm one of the very few Asheville natives. I graduated from TC Roberson in '98. Are you native or an import? How long have you been here?

BTW, if my memory serves me correctly, which it rarely does, I believe Ed is a regular of the local users' group. You may be interested in tagging along next month to chat with the few geeks that attend.

Hum okay on the sleep part. I had to take my QS machine back. The MDD model that was replacing mine fried, so no more server for now...

Yeah most of my life I've been around in this area. I also went to Roberson and graduated in 96'. I live right near the Glen Arden School. Do you attend the Mac Club meetings in Asheville?
