If you are going to use the mail server you had better do your research. Go to the forums on Mac OSX server at apple.com. There is a known bug that is causing quite a few problems. It seems that some mail will not be delivered to some of the larger ISPs. Below is a quote from just 1 user, I am having the same problem and it is not limited to just 1 network either, cox.net and mindspring.com are also affected. I have some very upset General Managers that really don't care what the problem is they just want it to work. I am looking at alternatives. If you have any thoughts on this please drop me a line

"I've set up the mailserver on my G4 server and so far everything is working fine (mail comes in and out no problem) There is one
host though, telus.net, that consistently gives non-delivery notice when any of my users try to send mail to it. Sending mail to it from an @home.com account or others works fine. Any ideas what could be causing this?"

This is what apple posted for a solution.
"Mac OS X Server is unable to relay mail to SMTP servers that have an SMTP greeting message that is longer than 128 characters."

If that's the case, it's almost certainly something Apple have added to the version of sendmail they're running (clearly other sendmail implementations don't suffer from the same limits).

Have you tried downloading and compiling the latest sendmail from sendmail.org?

If you're running Mac OS X Server, you'd better get used to this kind of fix. You're a unix administrator now.

I have been using Redhat Linux for several years. Sendmail was never a problem even though it can be cryptic with the M4 macro processor.

Using the OS X server was not my first choice. I would have prefered a replacement for the hardware that died.

To clear up any confusion, the built-in (ie GUI administered) mail server in MOSXS is NOT set to use Sendmail by default. It is essentially a port of the ASIP mail server. It can be configured to use Sendmail as the MTA with a bit of fiddling (read: Apple FUBARed the setup), which overcomes the bounce, long message, and relay bugs, but you still have to deal with the monolithic, proprietary database mail store, which has no repair tools, unlike its predecessor.

I run my company mail on an X server. I use Sendmail, UW-IMAP, and SquirrelMail for web mail. It has been 100% reliable, and delivers mail into a subdir of the users' homedir in mbox format. It took me about a day to get it all going, including compiling imapd and setting up SSL for the webmail. In my next quiet lull at work (maybe autumn ) I'll do some king of a half-assed write up and post it on my idisk. in the meantime, if there are any queries, fire away here.

Of course, for a few quid (or bucks) you can buy Communigate Pro; Fire and Forget

Mac OS X Server doesn't (normally) use sendmail... Apple has their own mail server. It sucks. Sendmail is included, and it is possible to set it up so that it's used as your mail transfer agent but the Apple server is used as a POP/IMAP server -- it's actually quite good at that.

If you are will to go into more detail on how you got Sendmail configured and running this would be a big help.

Perhaps a point to a Guide of some sort. Need more info on OS X Sendmail config .

Are the files in the same place? Does the default install put all the files need to create a new config using the M4 macro?
