Hey All!

Running a network of about 30 OS 9 clients, 2 Windows Clients, 2 OS X clients, and 2 OS X servers (1 currently) and need a little help getting things running smoothly in the office.

My main OS X server handles the DHCPing for the office, and I would like to assign each one of these clients a domain name based on the name of the computer set in the File Sharing control panel.

The client domains should then be accessible through the Network Browser, the Chooser, and a web browser (provided web sharing is enabled) by typing the domain name.

So let's say the names of the client computers are named after lakes of the world. There's Erie, Titicaca and Michigan.

A user could simply go to erie.domain.com, and access the shared website of that client computer, or perhaps just type erie.

There was a short discussion regarding this issue in a previous archived thread, but nothing came out of it.

Has anyone any ideas about this issue?

You will need a DHCP server that includes DDNS (Dynamic DNS) support.

I have no idea whether the DHCP server in Mac OS XS includes DDNS support or not. If not, you'll need to download a DHCP server that does.

Check man dhcpd.conf to see if there's any reference to Dynamic DNS in the man pages. If there is it should give you some pointers as to what to do.
