I am considering purchasing an xserve to deploy in a colocation facility.
I have read that with a cobalt RaQ you just type the ip,netnmask and gateway in the small front lcd and access it remotely for the rest of the config.
How would this be done with an xserve? This is very important to me as I am located in Portugal(europe) and would have my server colocated in the states.

From there, use the server admin tools/apple remote desktop/ssh/webmin/whatever to admin the server from there.

thanks, but this is not what i am looking for.
I want it to be configured on the spot if possible.
In the xserve spec page there is mention of Remote Setup Assistant in the Remote monitoring and management tools section.
However i can't find any info about this remote setup assistant software anywhere else.

[disclaimer] I don't have an XServe (yet), so this is just speculation[/disclaimer]
My expectation is that when the box boots it automatically runs a setup assistant which includes prompts for IP address info. Once done you should be able to access the box remotely.
On that basis, I'd expect that you could ship a box to the colo and have the colo's remote-hands staff walk through the setup provided you give them the relevant numbers you want to use. Even given the typical remote hands technical level they should be able to handle the setup assistant
Alternatively, find a friendly Mac-Savvy person local to the colo and have them set it up. If your colo is in silicon valley I can do it for you.

Camelot,
Ideally i would be looking to lease a dedicated xserve from a hosting company but i cannot find anyone that does this. I have no problem where it is located, as long as prices are OK (and yes i know it will be more expensive than a cobalt raq...), good bandwidth, and prefer mac fanatics as a support team. Also, i don't mind and even understand a longer term contract and bigger startup cost.
I have checked and posted at webhostingtalk.com and cannot find
a single company that leases any kind of mac for webhosting...
My problem with purchasing the server and sending it to the states is price. We are located in Portugal(europe) and I fell kind of stupid buying a server here which is so much more expensive and then sending it to the place that sells the cheapest macs.
This xserve is to host websites we design and manage(no weird content...).
Any solutions? Thanks.

The only Mac-based hosting company I'm aware of is http://www.machosting.com/ They have various plans from a basic virtual-host up to dedicated servers (although, they own the server, not you).
If you're willing to buy an XServe here, I have spare space and bandwidth available in my networks (colocation facilities in WorldCom/UUNet and Exodus facilities). I'm sure we can work out something at little or no cost (depending on the bandwidth you need).

One of the biggest mac web hosting groups I know of is http://www.digitalforest.com/ Another one is http://www.inno-tech.com/ who hosts MacAddict
You might want to check them out.

Thanks for the help.
- How could I purchase a server in the states without being registered there as a company?
- I would have no problem not owning the server, a dedicated server package as supplied by most hosting companies with a monthly fee would be OK.
Camelot,
This is your company? You offer hosting services? Can you link me to your company site?

If you're happy with dedicated hosting rates, that may be the best way to go.

I'll send you a private message about my background.
