I finally got a return from apple on a bugreport I filed almost a year ago and which is still open:

Do not use itunes via an Apache proxy !!!!
The apache proxi on OS X (client (verified) and server (not verified) ) does not deconnect the stream when the user quits the stream on hit mac... as a result the bandwidth stays in use until the streaming server is reset ... which may take days.... I noticed this on my company's network... it slowed down to a crawl due to all those open streams.
Restarting apache on the proxy server kills all open streams and had to be done every hour or so (thanks to cron).

Apple said this was an issue with apache software... apple is not going to fix it.
