I just received an e-mail stating that several of the Adaptec cards are not OS X compatible (including the one I have- 2940UW).

I am going to OSX server (from ASIP 6.3) as soon as I get Retrospect for OSX in my hands. I back up to an AIT-2 autoloader (made by sony, packaged by LaCie). If you read the VersionTracker reviews of the Retrospect for OS X Update, everybody with this setup rates it 5 stars and has no problems.

My question is, what SCSI card are they using? Is this card truly incompatible, or is Adaptec trying to get a little extra money from me?

Well, for what its worth it will function in OSX.

What you can't do is boot from a partition with any drive connected through it. That's not usually a problem, and for a server, you'll likely want a seperate drive for system and apps than where you store your data.

I had a 45GB IBM external hooked up with a 2940U2W since the beta days on an unsupported 7600 with a G3 400mHz upgrade in it. Performed wonderfully with more than 320MB.

I'm now running YDL2.2 on this machine with the card, but it certainly works. By unsupported, it means they won't listen to you whine if it stops working with a future revision of the OS. As of 10.1.4 it was working fine (I installed YellowDog since). Just remember you *won't* want to try booting from a drive connected (which may work, I never tried it).

I'll second the functionality of the 2940UW. It's been in my Beige G3 since I've had X, and it's never had a problem. I actually have tried booting off of it, and that's a no go with X Works with 9 booting though, so that's kind of a plus. It was just plug and play, good luck...
