Hi all. I'm having a nightmare updating my OS X Server at home from 10.0.4
to 10.1.
When I boot up from the 10.1 update CD, the installer does all its usual
stuff. I select the HD to install on and it proceeds to start the
installation. Upon checking the HD, the installer unexpectedly quits and I
get a UNIX screen in front of me telling me that the Installer has
unexpectedly quit, press return to restart your computer (Which of course
doesn't work). I've booted up from a CD and ran disk first aid and also
booted up from a OS 9 CD and ran Diskwarrior 2.1 to rebuild the directory.
Neither has helped at all. Help! I want to start actually using this server
at home instead of it just sitting in the corner turning the meter round.
thanks
stu

A few Questions:
1 What Box is it? (G4, b/w g3, etc)
2 Do you have any odd PCI cards? (SCSI, ethernet, video etc)
3 I've never seen a "unix screen" telling me to "press return to restart" Are you sure it wasn't a Kernal Panic? "Panic. We are hanging here"
4 Any 3rd party crappy RAM? (stick with just the original, then pop the others back in.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Its a 433Mhz G4 Digital Audio. It has no third party stuff installed. Just the standard 128MB ram that came with it. I did try to reinstall OS 10.0.3 on it yesterday. When it came to the checking disk part again, it seemed to hang. The hard drive was making lots of noise and nothing happened for over an hour. I then restarted the machine. It still works fine in 10.0.4. Disk Utility doesn't report any errors, nor does Diskwarrior. I think I may have to back stuff up and reformat and see what happens. Any last minute suggestions?
thanks

Stuart- If you are certain you have a stock config ( I assume you mean G4/466, not 433) then my suggestion would be to start from scratch.
Back up any important data.
Zap the PRAM (cmd-opt-p-r)
Boot off OS 9 CD.
Run Drive Setup & low level the drive
Install os 9.
Install updates to get to 9.2.2
Install the newest version of X server you have.
It sounds like something hardware is flakey.
Good luck!
GregM.
