i have heard rumors, (macosrummors.com kind) that the finder in macosx will per a killable process. they went further to mention that it is likely that KDE and Gnome could be used in its place to act as the default gui (if recompiled). if that is so is it possible the finder might be ported easily to act as the gui for other forms of linux/unix if the source was available or if apple wanted to?

furthermore if that is so, what about stuff like quicktime, yellow box, and carbon? since they all will sit on the mach kernal could we see these portions of macosx run on other forms of unix too?

if so we may have a real monster comming up!

The Finder will only be cross-platform GUI solution tool if Apple ports Carbon + YellowBox (since it will likely be a mixture of the two), Enhanced QuickDraw, and more technology to the other UNIX platforms.

I have seen many things on the web mentioned about the "quitable" Finder in Mac OS X. People do not seem to know that the current version of the Finder is a killable process. However, the only way to kill the Finder process is to use AppleScript or some other scripting architecture to "tell" the Finder to quit.
