So the big question no one has asked yet is:
Will OS X Server in any way take advantage of the new multi-processor G4's Apple just announced?
(Don't answer too quickly, without concrete evidence; it IS based on UNIX, after all.)
Just wondering if anyone knew more than I did on this.

I don't think that EVERY variant of Unix is SMP enabled- Linux is supposed to be "a better Unix" (according to the narrow view of a number of its zealots..). It's just now getting good support for SMP. It's also my understanding that Apple had to do some work with OS X to get SMP implemented, and it wasn't just automatically there. I wouldn't expect this generation of OS X Server to have full support for it, though I may be wrong. I'm pretty sure that OS X DP4 has support for it, and I know that it definitely will by public beta.

I work for a school district and just ordered a $17,000+ (Duel Apple Cinema Displays, DVD-RAM, Duel 500's, 3 - 70Gig Drives, and free divorce papers for when my wife leaves me due to the fact that I haven't talked to her in a month) machine... Nice to see your tax dollars at work...
I wonder if it will work well enough to make them there web pages... <joke>

Did anyone see the keynote? Jobs said OS X is smp. Second, UNIX makes all apps share the processor by using threads. The the OS gives the threads to the processor to process. Thus all UNIX OS really have all the support for multi processors bulit in.

Well as far as I know... I have been running SMP on Linux for four years... the same amount of time I have been running Linux. It wasn't too good at first but for the past two years it has been excellent and will get even better. Most all of my machines from workstation to server are SMP and running very well thank you.
It's also my understanding that Apple had to do some work with OS X to get SMP implemented, and it wasn't just automatically there.
Dunno whay they are having a tough time of it... *BSD has had SMP support for several years now at... least for Intel hardware. I have found it to be even smoother than the SMP for Linux.

Jobs' copy of OS X that he demoed supported SMP. The final version will support SMP. But this doesn't mean DP4 supports SMP.

I would have to think that DP4 even DP3 would have SMP support. Apple has been rumored to have an MP machine around for awhile. Even if they didn't it would be so much easier to write that in from day one than wait awhile. Anyway SMP is part of a "fully modern OS" which is what Apple wanted.
Didn't next ship some multi processor machines?
