blue box doesn't do direct hardware access. therefore, no hardware-based dvd-decoding.
ditto the modem (if you're using server, aren't you already on a network? then why do you need a modem?)

mac os x server wasn't designed for the g4, at first it wouldn't even run on g4's (which was a debacle here at ga tech because they bought a bunch of g4's and server and nobody told them it wouldn't work, so the g4's were just sitting around for a while. apple straightened everything out when 1.2 was released and hooked them up so everyone's happy now)
also, mac os x server wasn't designed for doing fun things like dvd playback. that's not a priority. you could look for a third party app that would allow dvd playback in mac os x server, or you could wait for mac os x client's release.

but the main thing is that mosxs is meant to be a server/development system, and little else. if you need to do dvd-video etc., why not set aside a partition and install 9.0.4? you'd have to re-boot between server and 9.0.4, but that's the only way to do it.
sorry

If OS X SERVER 1.2 will let me use my dvd player on my g4 then why are others claiming thaT THE hardware cant be seen under the blue box (8.6) and yet will run under 9.0.4????? which is true?????????

the blue box doesn't have direct hardware access. people were telling you to setup a dual os configuration, with a dedicated partition for mac os 9. using the bluebox isn't the same as a dual os config.

sorry, i guess i wasn't very clear in my earlier post. i meant to do a dula-boot setup. (as in, run server, then when you want to do fun stuff, you reboot and run 9.0.4 (NOT in BlueBox), and then reboot back into server)
as for setting up a dual boot system, i seem to recall that it's covered in the x server manual (but i'm not sure). also, i KNOW i've seen it discussed on this forum, do a search for it.
ibooks don't come with video out (jobs' ibook for the demo was a custom hack) i suppose if you were adventurous, you could go hacking around the internals and figure something out to do mirroring (but don't hold me to that, i don't have the slightest idea how, and i don't recommend it in any case, at least not till the warranty runs out)
