I was just wondering if anyone else has gotten this to work. I get the
impression that OS X server 1.2 will install on first generation iMacs.
But I have version 1.1. When I run the installer it tell me it won't
install on my machine (it does that for my G4 as well). So I do
unsupported configuration install and when it gets to the part when I
choose a HD to install on, it always crashes. My questions are: Is there
a solution for this? Do I need 1.2?
Also, if I start up off the OSX booter CD (boots into OSX Server), it
gives me the option of what language I want to use to install (this is a
unix-like console). But when U chose English it tells me that there's no
target disk specified. Can I format a UFS volume and do the install from
the console?

iMac's not supported. Do you have any reason to believe it will work?
I always figured Apple wouldn't support IDE hard drives in server. Perhaps that's what you're experiencing.

i've got mac os x server installed on a rev d imac. i believe i used version 1.0 for the install and then upgraded to 1.2. i already had an ufs partition.
you can make ufs partitions with pdisk. basically you just specify that the type is going to be "Apple_Rhapsody_UFS"...
i'm assuming you know how to use pdisk. if you create a partition with 'C' it allows you to specify the partition type after you name the partition. once again i used "Apple _Rhapsody_UFS" and it worked.

As soon as I choose my MacOS (X) Server UFS partition, I get a "System Error -36" and the computer crashes.
As to why I think this will work? I've read extensively that OS X Server will do an unsupported install on all first generation iMacs.
Here's another question: Could it be a problem with the iMac firmware? Could I have a newer firmware than Server 1.1 supports?

tasslehawf :
I was able to successfully install MacOS X server on a Rev. A iMac using the unsupported install option. I also was able to successfully install on a G3/450 Rev. B after solving the same install crash you describe where it hangs on disk selection. I found the problem to be that MacOS X Server only supports IDE Master drives and I had a second IDE drive setup as slave I was trying to install on. Once I switched the drive to Master everything worked fine. Now this still won't help you since your iMac's harddrive is set to master by default from the factory , so unless you've tinkered with the IDE drive settings I doubt this is the same as your problem.
Hope you figure it out, check out the Apple TIL articles at their website, they were a great deal of help for me.

i believe i have applied all the firmware patches, so that shouldn't be the problem. you are booting off the mac os x server disk right?

First of all, yes I am booting off the CD.
Secondly, the HD in my iMac is set to "single". I think I had it set to master before and had to change it back to get the drive to boot. But I should check. I believe that the iMac's IDE bus for the HD only supports 1 drive, so then will it work to have that one drive set to master?
I'll have to set it to master again, and see what it does.

Have people that have installed OS X Server on their iMacs changed the jumper settings on their hard drives, or replaced their hard drives?

i changed the jumper settings and overclocked it from 333 to 400mhz. (on a side note, mac os 9 knew the cpu was at 400mhz but os x server thinks it's at -315mhz, the bus speed is also off)
anyway, the keyboard in os x server will not work if i keep certain usb devices plugged in (my pc cam for one) i'm not saying that that is your problem, but it's something you might wanna watch out for.

Arrg. Why won't this work??
iMac (Rev. C) 266. Hard drive jumpers set to "single" (I don't think it will work in master). 96mb RAM. Hard drive reformatted, 1 UPS Server partition.
It crashes with a system error -36 when I select and partition to install on every time.
