Hi all,

I recently upgraded Apache and installed TomCat... all went well.
I am now trying to install MySQL but am a little stumped as I do not know UNIX well enough.

when running the command

mysql_install_db (whether as root or using sudo),

I get this error:

Sorry, the host 'dhcppc2' could not be looked up.
Please configure the 'hostname' command to return a correct hostname.
If you want to solve this at a later stage, restart this script with
the --force option

I noticed there is a HOST environment variable which is also called dhcppc2 but not sure if they are connected. Can anyone please explain what all this means and how to configure my hostname command?

Thanks in advance.

Did you change your hosts file? Check /etc/hosts.

The only uncommented lines should be

127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost

If this is set corectly then you should not have any problem running the mysql_install_db.

Ciao!

Your reverse DNS is not set up for your host.

Talk to however does the DNS for your network.

You can ASSUME authority of your class C even if your not, but the rest of the world wont follow your lead..(only users of your DNS server)

Apple installed some good sample DNS config files with server in
/var/named/
and the main file is
/etc/named.conf

you can turn on DNS Via the Server Admin.
Then set the DNS server to your own IP in the Network Pain of System Prefs

here are some more links for setting up DNS..
