In the Apple-supplied documentation for Apache on the OS X Server CD, the statement is made that it is preferred for the Apache document root to be on a UFS volume ... not a HFS+ volume. But for a traditional Mac user like me, it is much more convenient to work from the Blue Box (better graphics tools, for example). Can someone tell me exactly why I should not serve WWW docs from HFS+?? I'm currently doing it, and it's working fine so far.

The idea is simple enough: HFS+ does not have any sort of real file-access protections. A clever hacker could conceivably access the files without having to worry about priveleges, not to mention anyone who happened to boot into the MacOS could easily change and alter your files without you giving an okay.

If you would like to hear the HFS/UFS workaround I employ for my own personal standalone (not connected to the Internet) workstation, please let me know via the forum, and I'll post details.
