I have a G4 450DP OS X Server 2.0 with FTP services turned on. This computer is outside of the company firewall. When I connect from within the company firewall, it takes upward of 30 sec. to connect via FTP to this server. However, when I connect to the Internet via my Earthlink dialup account, it connects almost instanously. It doesn't seem to be a DNS issue, but rather a firewall issue.

Does anyone know how OS X Server routes FTP calls. Any specific log item I should check for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest taking a look at the configuration of your ftp clients. Check to see if the one behind the firewall is set on passive or active mode, and check the one connecting from your Earthlink account as well. Also, check to see if it takes a long time to connect to other ftp servers from behind your firewall.
I abused my signature until she cried.

I've noticed that the PASV option on the clients causes the connection to take forever to complete. Like Scrod said check the client options and try again.

Thanks guys for the help. I checked the passive setting and that was not it. I also checked WU-FTP.org's page as OS X Server uses the WU-FTP as its FTP software (http://www.wu-ftpd.org) I still think it's something to do with our firewall. We are going to try and put it behind the firewall and play with a few more settings. Other interesting information I found on long delays with WU-FTP can be found in the FAQ on the following page: http://www.landfield.com/wu-ftpd/

Thanks again for your help and I'll post if I find anything new.
